History
The Student Association of Mississippi State University was established in 1916 in order to serve as the student government of Mississippi State University.
The Student Association proactively seeks out student interests, ideas, and concerns in order to effectively communicate these to university administration in order to better student life at Mississippi State and to promote a greater spirit of progress and loyalty for our alma mater.
The Student Association of Mississippi State University has produced several leaders in our state and country during its existence. Gillespie V. “Sonny” Montgomery, a former Student Association president, served in the United States House of Representatives from 1967 to 1997 and was the author of the G.I. Bill of Rights. A former Student Association Director of Governmental Relations, Ms. Amy Tuck, was elected Lieutenant Governor of the State of Mississippi in 1999 and served the State of Mississippi until 2002. Tuck was the second woman to be elected to statewide office in Mississippi and the first to have been reelected.
More recently the Student Association is responsible for Bulldog Bash, Mississippi's largest free outdoor concert, attracting over 30,000 people each year. The Student Association created “The Night Route,” a student transportation system that provides students with a free source of transportation on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings throughout the city of Starkville. The Student Association is also in charge of events such as Homecoming and The Drill. We also promote greater involvement in local, state and federal government, host several community service projects, promote the history of our university and past traditions, and ensure that student's voices are heard on our campus.
